Earthquakes Could Become More Frequent in 2018

Scientists have warned that in 2018 there may be more earthquakes.

The Earth naturally experiences changes in the speed of rotation. In 2018 our rotation is expected to slow.

This could cause bigger and more frequent earthquakes.

“The correlation between Earth’s rotation and earthquake activity is strong and suggests there is going to be an increase in numbers of intense earthquakes next year,” according to Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado in Boulder and Rebecca Bendick of the University of Montana in Missoula.

While it is difficult to say where earthquakes may strike, Bilham said they found that most of the intense earthquakes that responded to changes in day length seemed to occur near the equator.
