Atomic scientists reset their "Doomsday Clock" to its closest time to midnight in 64 years on Thursday.

The group says that the world was closer to catastrophe due to nuclear weapons, climate change and Donald Trump's election as U.S. president.

It was decided to move the hands from three minutes to two minutes and 30 seconds to midnight

The last time the clock was this close to midnight was back in 1953, marking the start of the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbol that represents a countdown to possible global catastrophe. It has been maintained since 1947 by the members of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists' Science and Security Board, who are in turn advised by the Governing Board and the Board of Sponsors, including 18 Nobel laureates.
