Do you have Icicles on Your Roof?

Do you have Icicles on You Roof? The cause of their formation may not be the result of a warm attic.

Icicle form when snow melts, runs down your roof and refreezes near the edge. This only occurs when part of your roof warms to above freezing.

The most common cause is of course inadequate insulation. However icicle formation is also influenced by the structure of your house, weather conditions, and even by the color of your roof.

Also if your dryer vent comes out below an eave of the roof, the heat usually goes straight up and causes ice immediately above it.

  • Some other causes are
  • Attic Ventilation
  • Chimneys and Flues
  • Kitchen and Bath Fans
  • Roof Color
  • Heavy Snow Fall
  • Outdoor & Indoor Temperature

In most cases, a combination of proper air-sealing, high levels of insulation, and adequate ventilation are the best solutions to reducing problems with roof ice.
