Death Toll from Harvey Rises

Soldiers with the Texas Army National Guard move through flooded Houston streets as floodwaters from Hurricane Harvey continue to rise.

Authorities say that 39 people have died as a result of Hurricane Harvey.

That number could rise as officials continue to search as floodwaters recede.

37,000 homes were heavily damaged and nearly 7,000 were destroyed. That is on top of the thousands of homes with minor damage.

About 325,000 people have already sought federal emergency aid.

FEMA says that over $57 million in individual assistance has already been paid.

Over 32,000 people remain in shelters across Texas.

U.S. President Donald Trump has sent congress a $7.85-billion US request for an initial down payment for Harvey relief and recovery efforts.
