Death and Desperation in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is struggling with the crippling impact of Hurricane Maria.

The Mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz says that, "people are starting to die" as the island awaits further help.

So far 47 people have been killed in the Caribbean by Hurricane Maria.

Governor Ricardo Rosselló says the island is “essentially devastated" in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The destruction from Hurricane Maria has set the island back 20 to 30 years according to officials.

Aid is slowly coming in. The problem is that many of the supplies are hung up in distribution centers such as San Juan, due to difficulties in transportation.

Evacuation orders were issued in Puerto Rico in advance of Maria, and officials announced that 450 shelters would open in the afternoon of September 18. As of September 19, at least 2,000 people in Puerto Rico have sought shelter.
