Corner Brook RNC Advising Motorists to be Prepared for Winter Driving

Posted by on Tuesday, January 10, 2017

The RNC in Corner Brook Region is reminding motorists that extra care should be taken when winter driving. During the winter, driving conditions can rapidly and unexpectedly change, creating hazards and challenges for drivers.

Cold temperatures, wind and blowing snow make all commutes a little more dangerous this time of year. ALWAYS assume road conditions will be slippery during the winter months.

Tips on safe winter driving:
  • Check the current weather conditions and the forecast, and monitor the media for weather and road conditions.
  • Allow extra time when travelling to and from destinations during the winter and slow down, so that you don’t feel rushed.
  • Travel below the posted limit.
  • Increase following distances to allow time to stop on slippery roads. Failing to stop at an intersection because the road was too slippery to stop is no excuse.
  • Ensure your vision is not obstructed. Make sure your windows are ALL clear of ice and snow.
  • Ensure you have winter tires on your vehicle.
  • Check all your lights to ensure they are working.
  • Ensure your wiper blades are in good working condition.
  • Fill up your windshield fluid and make sure it's working properly.
  • Lastly, have your vehicle fully serviced to avoid unnecessary breakdowns.
