There are concerns that a levee on the White River near Newport, Arkansas, is eroding.

On Thursday morning the river reached major flood stage.

Residents are being urged to leave their homes as there is a danger that the levee could fail.

A voluntary evacuation is in place after an emergency was declared by Jackson County Judge Jeff Phillips.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter in Newport, Arkansas as a precaution.
