Blizzard Shuts Down Parts of NL

A blizzard has collided with parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Most schools are closed for the day in western Newfoundland, there are some delays in central.

There are freezing rain, wind, and blizzard warnings along with snow squall watches and blowing snow advisories in effect.

Rain will continue across the Avalon and Burin today. 15 to 25 mm of rain is possible.

The snow will change to rain ice pellets or freezing rain then to rain early this morning in Central. 5 to 15 cm of snow is possible for most areas.

Western Newfoundland will remain as snow. This is where the heaviest snow is expected with 30 to 50 cm possible.
Southeastern Labrador will remain as snow. Heavy snow is expected with 20 to 30 cm possible.

Most areas are seeing strong wind also.

Road Report:
  • Avalon- Dry Roads, good visibility.
  • Eastern- Wet, slippery, and slushy sections.
  • Central- Wet sections, good visbility.
  • Western- Snow covered, poor visibility. Blowing snow reducing visibility. Use extreme caution. Advised to stay off Stephenville Access Road to Port aux Basques. Burgeo Highway road blocked. 
  • Labrador- Few snow covered and slippery sections. Good visibility.
There are several flight delays at Deer Lake Airport, Stephenville Airport, and Gander Airport.

Both the Port aux Basques and North Sydney crossing for Marine Atlantic are cancelled for this morning and tonight.
