Australia to Jump 1.8 Meters North

Posted by on Tuesday, August 2, 2016

New Year’s Day 2017 Australia will move quite a bit. By 1.8 meters in fact.

However, you won't be jolted northward on that day. Rather continental drift has been moving the country constantly for millions of years.

The tectonic plate that holds Australia is moving about 7 centimeters each year. As a result, Australia is actually 1.5 meters further south than it actually is. Although that may not seem like much it does have an impact on GPS systems.

This is the same thing that was performed in 1994.
