Algae Bloom in Florida

Posted by on Saturday, July 2, 2016

Florida is having a problem with bright blue-green algae blooms that have taken over waterways and beaches on Florida's Treasure Coast.

The Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, added two counties to the state of emergency already declared.
The order allows state and local governments to take action against the spread of the algal blooms by redirecting the water flow in and out of Lake Okeechobee.

This bloom can kill marine life.

An algal bloom is a rapid increase or accumulation in the population of algae (typically microscopic) in a water system. Cyanobacteria blooms are often called blue-green algae. Algal blooms may occur in freshwater as well as marine environments.
