7.8 earthquake off Indonesian Coast sparks Tsunami warning

Earlier today a magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred off Indonesia's Sumatra island. A tsunami warning was issued for parts of Sumatra, including West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh. Western Australia was put under a Tsunami watch including the city of Perth.

Originally the US Geological Survey put the earthquakes magnitude at 8.2, and then 8.1, before lowering it to 7.9 and then 7.8. It was also a shallow earthquake striking at a depth of just 10 kilometres.

Residents panicked and rushed to high ground. There were no immediate reports of damage and the warning has since been lifted.

The areas is frequented by earthquakes and tsunamis. It is within the Pacific Ring of Fire.
