There are two fatalities and 500,000 people have been forced to evacuate  in southwest Japan after widespread flooding triggered by torrential rainfall.

In the Fukuoka and Oita prefectures on the island of Kyushu there are eleven people missing. That area has been hit particularly hard by flooding and landslides.

Kyushu received their heaviest 24-hour rainfall totals since records began in 1976.

Numerous homes have been destroyed and in Fukuoka's Asakura city, a part of a junior high school collapsed.
