Officials have confirmed that at least 45 people have died after a tropical cyclone hit southern India.

Tropical Cyclone Gaja intensified into a depression over the Bay of Bengal on November 10.

The next day, the system was designated by the IMD as BOB 09.

Soon after, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert.

On November 11, the deep depression strengthened into a cyclonic storm, and was named 'Gaja'.

Electric damage is estimated to be about US$139 million.

More than 80,000 residents have been evacuated.
