More then 15,000 people have been displaced in Italy after yet another powerful earthquake rocked the central portion of the country.

On Sunday a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck near Norcia.

The displaced people are staying in hotels and temporary shelters.

Last week two other earthquakes shook parts of Italy.

There have been no reports of any deaths, however at least 20 people have been injured.

Pope Francis said on Sunday that "I'm praying for the injured and the families who have suffered the most damage, as well as for rescue and first-aid workers."

According to the USGS the Mediterranean region is seismically active due to the northward convergence of the African plate with respect to the Eurasian plate along a complex plate boundary.
